Why it matters
Intention is not a system. Deciding at breakfast that you will breathe before bed is not the same as having a mechanism that reliably delivers that prompt at the right moment. Research on habit formation is consistent on this point: implementation intentions — specific if-then plans that link a cue to a behavior — dramatically outperform general intentions. The BreathMAX Smart Reminders feature is that mechanism. It lets you schedule push notifications at five preset time slots mapped to natural daily transition points — morning, midday, early afternoon, evening, and night — or at any custom time you define down to the minute. Reminders can be tied to a specific preset, so the notification does not just say 'time to breathe' but tells you exactly which exercise is waiting. All notifications are local: generated and delivered on your device without transmitting any data to external servers. Privacy-first by architecture, not by policy. And because reminders integrate with the Streak System, a timely notification that prompts you to complete today's session is also the mechanism that keeps your streak alive — turning a daily alert into a daily habit anchor.
Inside the feature
The Smart Reminders system is built around five preset slots that reflect the natural rhythm of a practice day. The Morning slot (default 7:00 AM) anchors a wake-up or pre-work energizing session. The Midday slot (default 12:30 PM) targets the post-lunch energy dip with a focus-supporting preset. The Early Afternoon slot (default 3:00 PM) catches the mid-afternoon cortisol drop. The Evening slot (default 6:30 PM) supports the transition from work to rest. The Night slot (default 9:30 PM) is designed for pre-sleep patterns in the Calm or Sleep categories. All five default times are fully adjustable — tap any slot and use the hour/minute scroll picker to move it wherever your schedule demands.
Beyond the five preset slots, you can create additional custom reminders for any time. Users who practice twice in the morning, once at midday, and once before bed can configure exactly that schedule. There is no limit on the number of active reminders.
Per-preset reminder assignment is one of the features that separates BreathMAX reminders from generic notification schedulers. Rather than a notification that says 'Time to breathe,' you can configure a notification that says 'Your 4-7-8 Sleep session is ready' — pointing to a specific preset in your library, including custom patterns built in the Custom Exercise Builder. When you tap that notification, BreathMAX opens directly to that preset, one tap from starting the session. This reduces the decision overhead between receiving the prompt and beginning practice.
All reminders are local notifications. The scheduling logic runs entirely on your device — BreathMAX does not require a network connection to deliver reminders, and no notification data is transmitted to BreathMAX servers. This means reminders work in airplane mode, in low-connectivity areas, and on devices with strict data saver settings.
Timezone awareness is built in. If you travel across time zones, your scheduled reminders stay at the correct local times relative to your current timezone — your 7:00 AM reminder arrives at 7:00 AM wherever you are. The adjustment is handled by the OS notification scheduler, not by a server-side sync.
The daily goal tracker in the reminders system connects to the Statistics Tracking dashboard. You can set a daily session goal — one, two, or three sessions per day — and the reminders system uses that goal to determine which notifications are most actionable. If you have already met your daily goal, reminders for the remaining slots still fire unless you disable them, giving you flexibility to practice more without losing the prompt structure.
For users building a consistent practice for the first time, the recommended setup is simple: enable the Evening reminder pointing to a Calm category preset and the Morning reminder pointing to an Energize or Focus preset. Two reminders, two intentional transition points in the day, and the streak system does the rest.
How to use it
Open BreathMAX and tap the bell icon or go to Settings, then Reminders. You will see five preset time slots. Toggle any slot on to activate it — the default time is shown. Tap the time to adjust it using the hour and minute picker. To assign a specific preset to a reminder, tap the reminder slot and then tap Choose Preset — browse your library and select the exercise you want the notification to target. To create a custom reminder outside the five presets, tap Add Reminder and set your preferred time and optional preset. To set your daily session goal, scroll to Daily Goal within the Reminders screen and adjust the number. All reminders can be toggled individually without deleting them — useful when you want to pause a slot during travel or a rest week without losing the configuration.
